The top wine from Bell’Aja, demonstrating both power and opulence. Predominantly Merlot (95%) with some Cabernet Sauvignon – the grapes are sourced from the oldest parcel of Merlot in Le Sondraie vineyard in Bolgheri. Vines are cultivated in sandy / silt soils typical of the region. Merlot is harvested in the middle of the September, and Cabernet Sauvignon towards the end of that month. After fermentation and maceration for 25 days the wine is aged for 18 months in French oak. vibrant aromas of ripe cherry, redcurrant and rich dark fruit with notes of liquorice and cocoa. The palate is structured and complex with plum and bramble fruit and toasty oak characters. Juicy acidity and firm tannins on the long and polished finish.
“The nose opens with decadent vanilla, malted chocolate, wild herbs and macerated blackberries, then turns savoury with the tangy depth of warm pavement and petrol. The palate is sweet and juicy with more berries and chocolate, but a rising heat combines with earth and pepper on the finish to push back and create an energetic tension. An incredibly vibrant wine.” 94 points. Danielle Callegari, Wine Enthusiast (September 2025)
The Bolgheri DOC (established in 1994) runs parallel to the Tuscan coast, bordering on the Ligurian Sea. The proximity to the coast brings light into the vineyards, and the moderate temperatures ensure a slow and regular ripening period for the grapes – maintaining fresh acidity and aromas. The winery has 13.5 hectares of vineyard in the Bolgheri zone. 6 hectares are situated in the northern area of the DOC called Le Sondraie – just a couple of kilometres from the coast and due west of Siena. Vines here are around 10-15yrs old and planted in the sand-silt soils typical of the region (vineyard acquired in 2016).In addition they have recently acquired a further 7.5ha of vineyard (and a further 3.5ha to be developed) further south. Vines here were planted from 2000 – and they are also investing in a new winery building. International varieties dominate the region and this estate is no exception – with Merlot (4ha) and Cabernet Sauvignon (2ha) at Le Sondraie, and predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Syrah cultivated at their newer site.
