An intense stone fruit core with supporting notes of candied lemon, mineral and brioche. The palate is creamy with balanced acidity, yet with a refreshingly savoury finish.
The name Villaia has its origins from the rural tradition of the Marche region, where the threshing-floor outside rural houses was not just where the grain was threshed, but was also the family’s center of social activity. Verdicchio wine was always present in the convivial moments of country life and we want to re-evoke these traditional country rites with Villaia’s natural typicality. The vineyard called Colle del Sole located in the municipality of Maiolati Spontini is characterized by its soil rich of clay and silt. Verdicchio grapes are cultivated in the eastern part of hill on 4 hectares of soft hilly terrains. The average altitude is 120 meters above sea level.
“Perhaps the most versatile of Italy’s native white grapes is Le Marche’s Verdicchio (vair-DEEK-kyo). This ‘Classico Superiore’, a single-vineyard wine, picked at full ripeness and naturally vinified, is gently aromatic on the nose, featuring wild herbs, temperate-climate fruits (apples, apricots), but with a hint, too, of the sub-tropical (grapefruit). Multi- faceted on the palate, it is subtle and penetrating with a delicious smack of ripe fruit in its heart. Beautifully balanced by crunchy acidity, it boasts a creamy texture which makes it mighty difficult to spit. My advice: Don’t.” – Nicolas Belfrage MW
The 350ha Monte Schiavo estate in Marche is a testament to the Pieralisi family whose background was in olive oil manufacturing equipment, but 20 years ago began to invest in agriculture, also purchasing vineyards from the co-operative within Maiolati Spontini. The estate now consists of around 100ha of vineyard, 50 ha olive groves, and other agricultural crops. They own a portfolio of prime vineyard within the Castelli di Jesi zone, and the Monte Schiavo winery is situated amongst some of their most prized plots, notably the Colle del Sole vineyard.
Slowly Gennaro Pieralisi and his son Andrea have developed their winemaking capabilities and production. Although initially focused on the Verdicchio grape, over the last 10 years they have also developed a range of red wines from their own estate fruit (with the exception of their Rosso Conero, which is produced in collaboration with Alberto Serenelli).
The success of their manufacturing business has allowed the Pieralisi family to invest heavily in the estate. They use state-of-the-art technology, and as they have grown they have strived to improve quality and reduce yields. The appointment of talented young winemaker Simone Schiaffino, and collaboration with renowned Italian winemaking consultant Carlo Ferrini since the 2015 vintage, has added a new depth and complexity to their portfolio.
