Waterkloof Circumstance Cape Coral Mourvèdre Rosé

Circumstance Cape Coral Mourvèdre Rosé

2022 Stellenbosch, South Africa, 75cl

Waterkloof Circumstance Cape Coral Mourvèdre Rosé

Mourvèdre is one of the most underrated red grape wine varietals and it goes by multiple other names, including Mataró. It is a well-known rosé varietal used in regions such as Provence and the Rhône Valley in France. Circumstance Cape Coral Mourvèdre is produced from grapes on the slopes of the Schapenberg hill, as well as the rest of the Stellenbosch wine growing region, characterized by relatively mild winters and long, warm summers. The vines are cultivated under dryland conditions and planted in a combination of sandstone and deep red soils which provide adequate water for this late ripening varietal. A delightfully pale coloured rosé. Delicate, fresh red berry aromas, hints of rose petals, combined with a flinty note are prominent on the nose. The palate shows lovely acidity and elegance with a lingering aftertaste.
Tamlyn Currin at has just released her verdict on the wine:
“Full bottle 1,163g. Screwcap. A certified WWF Conservation Champion and certified SWSA Integrity & Sustinabaility. 100% Mourvèdre from low-yielding vines on ocean-facing slopes. Whole-bunch pressed. Spontaneous fermentation in large, old wooden vats. Satin textured, weighty and pretty serious rosé, even when tasted amidst a decent line-up of peers and superiors in terms of price point and reputation. Dried flowers on the nose – marigolds, hibiscus, rose and chamomile petals. Very savoury, much more so than most of the wines tasted with it. Blood orange, guava, rose hips and fingertips of marzipan smudged out by maraschino-cherry flavours, but despite the sweetness of these flavours, the overriding impression is savoury and dry. A gastronomic wine, and punching well above its price point. VGV (Very Good Value) 13.5% Drink 2022-2024”

Behind the bottle: Waterkloof

Founded by Paul Boutinot in 2004, Waterkloof is a family-owned farm using organic practices. The farm is perched high up on the windswept Schapenberg, overlooking False Bay and The Atlantic Ocean. Living soils, naturally low yields and a long growing season help provide talented Cellarmaster Nadia Barnard with naturally balanced grapes that are imbued with a truly defining sense of origin. Those grapes are then transformed into wine with a minimum of intervention. The resulting wines are fine, inimitable and best enjoyed with food.
