Vignobles Bertin Château Dallau, Bordeaux Supérieur

Château Dallau is situated in the commune of Saint Denis de Pile and is the home of the estate’s doyenne, Mme Yvette Bertin. The Château’s sand and gravel vineyards comprise 32 hectares of mostly Merlot, along with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon and averaging 20 years of age. The predominance of Merlot shows here, with ripe plum and red cherry aromas, a touch of freshly sharpened pencil and a hint of Cabernet Franc’s ‘sous-bois’ character. The palate is generous; there’s some richness lent by oak, finishing with warm spice and ripe, upright tannins. A traditional style of Claret, lending itself well to luncheon parties.

Behind the bottle: Vignobles Bertin

The Bertin family have produced wine in Bordeaux since 1742, with three estates in different Libournais appellations – Château Cardinal (Montagne-Saint-Émilion), Clos de L’Hermitage (Lalande de Pomerol) and Château Dallau (Bordeaux Supérieur). Their vineyards are mainly planted with Merlot, together with some Cabernet Sauvignon for structure and some Cabernet Franc for aromatic complexity. Under Mme Yvette Bertin, who works with her grand-daughter Sarah Boireau, the aim is to produce full bodied, mellow and balanced wines by bringing fresh expertise to ancient traditions.
