Santa Barbara County Pinot Noir

2020 Santa Barbara, USA, 75cl

Nielson Vineyards Santa Barbara County Pinot Noir

A very cool winter and spring led to a harvest with small clusters and small berries with flavours of dark berry, cherry, hints of floral and mineral. The wines spends 10 months in French Oak, 3% of which was new. Open with a floral and mineral character typical of Santa Barbara. Classically varietal characteristics are demonstrated with wild strawberry fruit, firm bright acidity and a fresh gentle mineral finish.

Behind the bottle: Nielson Vineyards

Nieto Senetiner is one of the oldest and most respected wineries in Argentina: the vineyards and winery were established in 1888 and later bought by the Nieto and Senetiner families under which name of the winery operates. They have plots throughout Mendoza, typically in all the best sub-districts, both owned and under contract. To ensure the sustainabilty of all the vineyards, they provide their growers with a manual of good agricultural practices and sustainability guidelines to which they should adhere, with the request for documentation of any treatments made during the growing season, including ensuring additional time for compounds to breakdown and thus ensure grapes arrive without any chemical residue. With Tim Aiken’s ‘Young Winemaker of the Year 2017’ Santiago Mayorga on board, we can see not only consistency but exciting times ahead – one to watch!
