This is a seriously impressive wine from one of the best producers in the Rhône. In 1936 when government experts arrived to inspect the Clos for its inclusion in the new appellation (Châteauneuf-du-Pape), they were met with armed caretakers telling them they were not welcome! Therefore, Clos du Caillou has continued to be classified as ‘Côtes du Rhône’ whereas it is in fact, a mini powerhouse of flavour! Soft spices, star anise, sichuan pepper are accompanied by cherry liqueur and floral notes on the nose, with layers of black fruits of the forest and blackcurrant abundant on the noseand palate. The wine is elegant with rounded tannins and is ready to be drink now, but can be aged further for several years. Dynamite stuff!

Based just 4 miles from the sea in Herstmonceux, East Sussex, the 7 acre vineyard was created in 2007 by ex-Formula One engineer, Lawrence Warr. The winery was named in honour of Larry’s French ancestor, Henners Dubois, who was forced to flee Paris for England during the French Revolution in the in the late 18th Century. The unique combination of warm well drained sandstone soils, a southerly aspect slope coupled with low altitude, three miles from the sea and at just 24m above sea level. Harvest usually takes place in late September. They take a non-interventionist approach in the winery, made possible by the quality of the fruit. Vine clones and varieties are fermented separately to allow a broad palette of wines for final blending.
