Champagne Larmandier Bernier Vieilles Vignes du Levant Blanc de Blanc Grand Cru Extra Brut

Champagne Larmandier Bernier

Vieilles Vignes du Levant Blanc de Blanc Grand Cru Extra Brut

2013 Champagne, France, 75cl

Champagne Larmandier Bernier Vieilles Vignes du Levant Blanc de Blanc Grand Cru Extra Brut

From an assembly exclusively of wines from different plots of the Coteau de Cramant classified Grands Cru and exposed to the Levant. This privileged exposure associated with a very calcareous soil on which the vines are more than forty years old and for some more than eighty years old contribute to the birth of an exceptional wine.
Dazzling gold in colour, the nose and palate offer a beautiful symphony of fragrances of white spring and summer flowers such as peach, pear or apple, elegantly mixed with citrus zest of lemon, lime, kumquat, hot brioche and toasted buns. Previously named ‘Vieille Vigne de Cramant’, this cuvée originates from a single site of old vines of between 48-75 years of age. Matured for at least 5 years and bottled with a very light dosage of less than 4 g/l. Arguably, one of the finest grower producers in Champagne, Pierre and Sophie Larmandier make top class wines of great elegance and rivetingly pristine, precisely etched expressions of their various vineyard sites.

Behind the bottle: Champagne Larmandier Bernier

Averaging 33 years of age, Larmandier-Bernier’s 15 hectares of vineyards lie on the spectacular terroirs of the Côte des Blancs: Vertus, a 1er cru village, as well as the Grand Crus Cramant, Chouilly, Oger and Avize. Overall 85% is planted with Chardonnay and 15% Pinot Noir. According to Pierre and Sophie Larmandier, “the creation of a great Champagne, like the creation of any great wine, begins in the vineyard.” This philosophy is why they manage their vineyards biodynamically, harvesting their grapes manually at optimal ripeness to produce extraordinary expressions of each terroir. Their vines are cultivated with respect for the terroir (ploughing, which favours deep-reaching roots and preserves the life of the soil) and for the plant throughout the growing period. Pressing is undertaken as gently as possible to extract the purest juice only. Each cru is vinified separately. Fermentations using natural yeasts in a mixture of stainless steel vats, wooden casks and barrels, together with long, slow ageing at either Brut Nature (0 g/l) or Extra Brut (2-5 g/l) dosage levels allow for as clear expressions as possible.

“Larmandier-Bernier is a huge favourite with me. The quality of the wines is stupendous and joyful.” Jancis Robinson MW, Purple Pages of
