Aria Vini Le Dolci Colline Prosecco Spumante Brut

We know there’s a serious amount of mediocre Prosecco on the market, which frankly makes me very wary of Prosecco. Seeking out a suitable example for our list took a long time, lots of tasting and a huge amount of disappointment until we discovered this little gem. Fresh and gently fruity fizz from northeast Italy with citrus and green apple aromas. Delicate and lively on the palate with ripe, lightly grapey fruit, zesty acidity and a clean, refreshing finish. Perfect for parties!

Domaine J. Laurens Crémant de Limoux ‘La Rose No.7’

An absolute favourite of MFW! The modern label and beautiful pale pink hue are a great introduction to the treat in store!  This beautifully balanced wine shows delicate soft stone fruit aromas, nuances of caramel and cream with a nice biscuity finish. A very modern style of Crémant de Limoux, just as the label would indicate, but years of expertise have gone in to creating this outstanding traditional method Crémant.

Champagne Charles Chevalier Brut d’Honneur

A fantastic ‘House’ Champagne, produced from Pinot Noir grown in the excellent vineyards of Aÿ, with Chardonnay and a little addition of Pinot Meunier from village and Premier Cru vineyards sites.  This is a really approachable Champagne which after 36 months of ageing, offers a delicious balance of ripe fruit, a biscuity edge and plenty of good quality bubbles.

Champagne Lallier Grand Cru Grande Réserve Brut NV

70cl bottle & Magnum Sourced exclusively from vineyards officially classified Grand Cru, the Pinot Noir is sourced from the Grand Cru Aÿ and the Chardonnay from the Grand Crus of Avize and Cramant in the Côte Blancs. The provenance of the grapes enables a low dosage to express the purity and the richness of these terroirs. With great complexity and finesse, this has an energising, citrusy palate and delivers an equal measure of ripe, toasty fruit followed by a tasty, elegant finish.

Whites to wow!

Sauvigon Blanc

ZoRGvliet Silver Myn Sauvignon Blanc

Produced from the boutique winery in Banghoek on the Helshoogte Pass between Stellenbosch and Franschhoek comes this super Sauvignon Blanc.  Light yellow in colour with hints of lime green, the nose shows wonderful aromas of greener tropical fruit such as green melon, kiwi fruit and fig. This character is true to the Banghoek terroir – lots of gooseberry zip, linear, crisp and racy. This is a mouth filling wine with firm acidity leading to a multi-layered complex palate showing distinct mineral and fig flavours on the finish. An absolute classic from this 100% Bordelaise estate!

Domaine Michel Girard Sancerre ‘Silex’

Hand-picked, carefully selected estate fruit from the best parcels of old vines. The nose is heady, earthy and herbaceous. The wine has significant palate weight, very rounded with a rich texture and long finish, but still dry. An outstanding Touraine Sauvignon!

Domaine du Pré Baron Touraine Sauvignon Blanc Vieilles Vignes

Although the Girard’s have vines growing in all three of Sancerre’s major soil types, this wine is sourced from two exceptional vineyards of Silex (flint) soil. Grapes from old vines were hand-picked and gently pressed, with fermentation in stainless steel tanks. If ever there was a wine that tasted of the soil in which it was grown, this is it! Philippe Girard’s Silex Sancerre opens with a crackle of gun smoke and earthy, stony notes. The full palate is lively and expressive with pronounced minerality and a long, long finish. Fantastique!!

Justin Girardin Santenay Blanc ‘Les Terrasses de Bievaux

Practising Organic Viticulture

A perennial favourite of MFW, ‘Terrasses de Bievaux’, demonstrates excellent value for white Burgundy! As the name implies, this fine steeply sloped parcel (2.4 hectares) of 30-year-old vines is mainly planted on terraces.  Hand harvested, natural yeasts. The alcoholic fermentation finishes in barrel for better oak integration. 12 months maturation on lees in French oak barriques (15% new) provides adequate time for the wine to harmonise…utterly delicious!

Domaine Berthelemot, St Aubin, Premier Cru ‘Dents de Chien’

A rich, textural expression of Domaine Berthelemot’s most recent vineyard acquisition. ‘Dents de Chien’ refers to the sharp stones which can be found in this Premier Cru climat. Reflecting the warmth of the 2019 vintage, this is already approachable and complete with forward ripe fruit, depth and richness from the oak and a complex, full palate balanced with some saline freshness on the finish. This is one of our favourite plots in St. Aubin as the mineral terroir always shines through.

Genetie Bourgogne Chardonnay ‘Illuminé’

A classic Chardonnay from Southern Burgundy – fine buttery and floral notes on the nose and a wine of substance and finesse on the palate. Some creamy textural notes up front reveal the discreet presence of oak, whilst on the finish there is some underlying minerality and a hint of citrus zestiness that provides long lasting flavours.

Awatere River Pinot Gris

Practising Organic Viticulture

Made by Louis Vavasour, whose parents were the pioneers of the winemaking in the area and firmly put Awatere on the International wine map such was the quality of the terroir. Pinot Gris made from grapes grown in select vineyards with alluvial soils. It was fermented with select yeasts and matured on fine yeast lees. With notes of melon, peach and cardamom, it has a generous palate with soft texture, spiciness and gentle acidity on the finish.

Domaine Grand Veneur Côtes du Rhône Blanc Reserve

A blend of Roussanne Viognier and Clairette, it is pale yellow in colour, bright and with a gold tinge. Primary aroma of flowers and stone fruit. On the palate, the fruit is immediately present with touches of almond and white peach. Really delicious drinking!

Compañia Bodeguera de Valenciso Rioja Blanco

Complex aromas combining floral characters with preserved lemon, truffle and smoky notes. The palate is intense and broad with nuts, stone fruit characters, candied peel, minerality and balancing citrus acidity on the finish. This is an exceptional, classic white Rioja from old vines in Rioja Alta. Stunning quality.

Araldica Castelvero Valle Vento Gavi del Comune di Tassarolo

A truly expressive example of Gavi, fantastic value for a wine that seriously over delivers. Gently aromatic with zesty citrus, stone fruit and white flower characters. Lime, honeysuckle and mineral notes come to the fore on the expressive, vibrant palate. Ripe and textural with taut acidity leading to a clean, zingy finish

Boutinot Brisa de Verano Garnacha Tinta

Pronounced aromas of dark plum and bramble fruit with hints of peppery spice. The palate has layers of red fruit, blackberry and mocha notes, together with ripe tannins. The result is a rich and complex red with a full finish. Absolutely brilliant value!

Azienda Agricola Contesa Montepulciano d’Abruzzo

Exceptionally fine, richly flavoured Montepulciano produced from a selection of grapes from the best plots of Montepulciano grown on the Contesa estate in Collecorvino, 250m above sea level. Vibrant aromas of ripe black fruit, with hints of dark chocolate and spicy oak. The palate is rich and generous with abundant bramble and black cherry fruit, and structured tannins are balanced by fresh acidity to give an elegant finish.

Gómez Cruzado Rioja Reserva

Pronounced black cherry, cedar and spice aromas. The palate is supple yet richly flavoured with layers of dark plum, bramble fruit and cherry supported by well-integrated tannins. Toasty notes, black pepper and dried fruit characters on the finish. Produced entirely from Tempranillo grapes sourced from 30-year-old bush vines planted in the Sierra Cantabria foothills, the wine is aged for 18 months in 50% French and 50% American oak barriques (new and second year), followed by 2 years of bottle ageing. Showing perfect integration, this Reserva is the result of a perfect combination of Tempranillo fruit from different terroir – the alluvial soils give ripeness and elegance, whilst the limestone-clay add structure and silkiness.

Auntsfield Estate Single Vineyard Pinot Noir

Perfect for starting to enjoy now and over the next 8 years, the nose offers rich black cherry and plum fruit which is subtly lifted by layers of dark red florals and complex savoury aromas of dark chocolate, cigar box and olive tapenade. The palate of this wine shows a rich silky texture, which is full and concentrated. Flavours of ripe berry fruit and dark plum fill the pallet. This fruit is supported by powerful yet fine polished tannins giving a plush yet silky texture with seamless length.

Domain Chante Cigale Rouge, Pays Mediterranee

From 2 lieu-dits in Travaillan to the west of Gigondas – La Marteillère with clay soil for the Grenache & L’Hers on limestone for the Carignan, vines are 30 years old. Hand-harvested and de-stemmed, short maceration in concrete for the Grenache plus aging in 5-year-old Burgundy barrels for the Carignan to round out the tannins. Cicada takes its name from famed ‘singing cicadas’ of Provence. Fresh ripe red fruits on the nose, flavours are more dark cherry with a touch of spice. The Carignan adds soul to the vibrant Grenache, nicely balanced acidity with smooth tannins.

Domaine Fabien Duveau Saumur Champigny ‘Les Meais’

Vinified with native yeasts in cement and aged in stainless, Duveau’s entrée into the Saumur-Champigny range is a gorgeous, fresh, juicy wine that brings the drinker back, glass after glass. Grown in clay and limestone soils within the vineyard of Les Menais, located in Verrains, the wine captures the classic aromatic quality of Cabernet Franc and really over-delivers for the price point.

Vignobles Bertin Clos l’Hermitage, Lalande de Pomerol

A proper baby Pomerol!  Dominated by Merlot, the style is voluptuous yet poised and well-balanced, with plump, dark cherry fruit and a meaty, savoury finish. A really super example of right-bank Bordeaux.

Rosé Whatever the Weather!

La Bastide des Deux Lunes Rosé ‘Tout Près des Étoiles’ Côtes de Provence

La Bastide des Deux Lunes is located in Puget-Ville, in the middle of the Permian depression that surrounds the Massif des Maures from Toulon to St Raphael, and which separates the crystalline Provence from the limestone Provence. Bertrand Dubois manages the 22ha estate using ‘lutte raisonnée’ (reasoned agriculture) and works closely with Olivier Duffort (formerly of Château Moutete). Very pale, almost translucent, salmon pink. Aromatic, ripe stone fruit on the nose. Fine and nicely balanced on the palate. Refreshing yet properly satisfying as you’d expect from a good Côtes de Provence rosé.

Famille Fabre Château de Luc Corbieres Rosé ‘Les Jumelies’

The Fabre Family have been producing wine in one way or another for over four hundred years. Since 1991, Famille Fabre has been converted to organic viticulture and today 100% of its vineyards are certified organic, producing concentrated, flavoursome wines with genuine provenance. A pretty, pale rosé with fresh aromas of red berry fruits and a hint of rose petal. The palate has redcurrant, cherry and stone fruit characters with a crisp, lightly saline edge.

Domaine de Grange Neuve Monbazillac (50cl)

Vineyards are based in the heart of Périgord, near Bergerac along the valley of the Dordogne River. Here, on the river slopes there is a particular micro-climate which favours the development of the botrytis necessary to make this style of sweet wine.  A fabulous dessert wine, sweet and luscious with a great backbone of fine acidity for a clean finish. The nose is fresh with classic botrytis marmalade and ripe nectarine. Flavours on the palate are richer: honey with a finishing twist of bitter orange.

Château de Plaisance Coteaux de Layon Premier Cru Chaume

The wines of Premier Cru Chaume are distinctly superior quality to the other wines of the Coteaux du Layon appellation.  Multiple manual harvests through the Chaume vineyard ensure the botrytised grapes at their optimum ripeness from the 50-year-old vines.  Offering amazing concentration and richness (residual sugar level of 98g/L), the sweetness is perfectly balanced by refreshing acidity. Aromatic apricot, almond and honey notes on the nose continue with vibrant citrus acidity cleansing the palate.  The wine offers depth, complexity and beautiful texture. Far too often these wines are overlooked, which means they are incredible bargains!
